Reducing Carbon Emissions in Your Home.
By Jim • Apr 1st, 2008 • Category: Green ProjectsDid you know that every time you use electricity in you home, i.e. when you switch on the lights, TV, or even prepare and cook a meal, that you’re burning Fossil Fuels, which is the largest and most dangerous cause of CO2 Emission in the world?
This is seriously harming the planet and whether you like or not, you are contributing for a massive amount of Global Warming each and every day. The most effective way to prevent this is to turn to Renewable Sources, which in turn will cut your CO2 Emission down to 0%, however if that isn’t your cup of tea, then we have a few easier and less expensive ways in which you can do your part. They are as follows:

Reducing your Thermostat:
The majority of people worldwide usually have their Thermostat set too high, which has a huge effect on Global Warming. By turning it down merely 2°C, you’ll save yourself a whopping 10% in heating bills, as well as greatly reducing your CO2 Emission. Did you know that if you and all of your friends turned your Thermostat down by 2°C that you would reduce your CO2 Emission by a massive 3.6 Tonnes, every year?!
Avoid Standby – Switch off at the Mains:
Most people worldwide don’t actually switch off the power of everyday electrical products such as TV, Video and DVD Players, Sky Boxes, Sound Systems etc, at the mains when they go to sleep or leave the house for the day, but instead switch it to standby; this still uses a great deal of unnecessary electricity. This is another massive problem of wasted CO2 Emission, as well as wasted money. Switching off all of your electrical items when you’re not using them will save you roughly 10-60% in electricity bills, and if a mere 10 homes switched their TV’s off at the mains, then CO2 would be reduced by 1 Tonne!

Defrosting your Fridge/Freezer:
Defrosting your Freezer on a regularly basis will maintain its CO2 Emission to a minimum. Also set your Fridge / Freezer to the correct temperature; the majority of people’s Freezers are set too low. Check these two things often and you could reduce the Carbon Emission greatly and save yourself money in electricity bills at the same time!
Full-Load Washing:
Instead of doing two or three half loads of washing a week, save your wash for the weekend and do just one full load of clothes each week. This will save you money on water, electricity and washing powder, whilst reducing the CO2 Emission for a healthier environment also!

Energy Saving Light Bulbs:
Using Energy Saving Light Bulbs such as ‘BioBulb’ for example, will save you around £10 every year, and reduce the CO2 by up to 0.8 Tonnes. Energy Efficient Bulbs also have a greater life expectancy and last hell of a lot longer, thus saving you more money in the long run also.
Insulation – Water Tank, Walls and Loft:
Insulating your home, including your Hot Water Tank, Walls, and Loft, will prevent heat from escaping. This will save you a considerable amount of money and reduce the CO2 Emission by a massive amount. Fitting a Lagging Jacket around your Water Tank is the first stage; it’s cheap and easier, and you’ll notice the difference immediately.
Did you know that up to 35% of your household heat is lost through the Walls? And therefore installing Cavity Wall Insulation will reduce the amount of Carbon Emission dramatically whilst saving you around £90 every year on heating bills!
Finally your Loft Insulation; fitting a 180mm Loft Insulation will initially cost around £200, however from there on in you’ll reduce the heat escaping from your home by up to 25% and will seriously reduce the CO2 Emission, and save you around £20-£30 on heating bills!

Energy Efficient Boilers:
Installing an Energy Efficient Boiler is another great way to reduce CO2 Emission and save you money in the long run. Did you know that if your Boiler is over 15 years old, then it’s more than likely not Energy Efficient and needs changing? Check out your Boiler, switch to an Energy Efficient one, and do your part!
Try to impliment the above into your everyday life, as we have, and overtime these small changes will see that we can make a BIG difference to the future of our planet.
